Super Six Sri Lankan Film

Super 6 Sri Lanka New Movie

The maiden direction of experienced television programme producer, Udara Palliyaguruge, the film is about cricket and a group of youngsters with their lives, romances and many other interesting encounters that they come across.
‘Super Six’ centres around a group of youngsters from a town in Moratuwa. The game of cricket brings their worlds and dreams on to one platform — the pitch!. Set within the present day, the freewheeling passion for Cricket decides the fate of the young groups and their dreams.
Unpredictable perils of fate and destiny are both the subjects of their lives. The kinetic journey goes through friendship, love, madness and creativity: The young individuals unbridled hopes of youth take them to a professional tournament called the ‘Super Sixes’. Rivalry among the teams begins, not only on the pitch but outside it too. Along the way they discover the true meaning of love, friendship and most of all courage.
Estimated at Rs. 77 million, the biggest part of the budget is to be spent to improve a technically high standard movie with extraordinary action sequences.

“This is going to be a completely different cinematic experience for Sri Lankan cinema goers and we are 100% sure that it is going to be a hit,” Sadesh Kumar, the producer of the film said replying to a question of taking risks with high budget movies in Sri Lanka.

A star studded cast that includes Roshan Ranawana, Sanath Gunathilake and debuting former Miss Sri Lanka Aruni Rajapakse, Director Udaya Palliyaguruge’s Super Six is a film that combines the influences of romance, comedy, action and fantasy and is the first movie to be launched in Sri Lanka after the end to the war.

It also happens to be the country’s largest commercial budgeted movie at a production cost of Rs 77 million. A Sri Lankan cast of over 600, which includes 160 in the main cast, 180 technical and a host of extras handpicked for their talent ensure a one of a kind movie experience.

According to the director the genre of this film is “Jollywood’, stating that it incorporates all emotions and senses known to the ‘human mind and spirit’. Speaking at the launch of the movie at Cinnamon Grand Colombo Palliyaguruge stated, “With cricket being Sri Lanka’s national pastime,Super Six revolves around a group of youth from Moratuwa participating in the Super Sixes, a six a side tournament.” He added, “There are unpredictable perils of fate and destiny that are intertwined in each of these young people’s lives while they strive to achieve their dreams on the singular platform of the cricket pitch. But the rivalry between the teams spillover into their off-the-pitch lives although the ultimate lessons are the values they learn from each other in this ‘Super Sixes’ tournament.”

As head of Aristo Films, a 100% Sri Lankan film Production Company formed in 2005, Palliyaguruge also combines the genius of R Sadesh Kumar into the film which is set to be on location in both Sri Lanka and Malaysia, using technical resources from India. This is also the first time that an ARRI 435 camera is being used with Kodak Vision 3 Film. In addition, Palliyaguruge has gained the expertise of a choreographer and professional stuntmen from India, incorporating aerial views from a specially commissioned helicopter to add to the nuances of movie. Seven especially composed songs comprise the movie soundtrack.

In addition there is a supporting cast of nearly 160 in this movie together with nearly 80 in the technical crew.

Anura Ekanayake has scripted the film while R. Costa is the cinematographer and M. Ayagama is the art director. I. Udaralanka handles makeup while Sumathi Kudaligama is the costume director and A. Ariyaratne and Shanaka are production managers.

Music direction is by Mahesh Denipitiya and Iraj Weeraratne set to the lyrics of Nilar M Cassim, Nandana Wickramage and Wasantha Bandara Dukgannarala. Playback singing is by Rookantha Gunathilake, Champa Kalhari, Shihan Mihiranga and Surendra Perera.

Filming of Super 6 will comment in September and continue until mid November this year. The film is planned to be ready for release within a year and various locations for shooting within the island and in Malaysia are finalized. Aristo Films will produce and market this film. Why was ‘Ekamath Eka Rateka’ overlooked?

Monday, January 17, 2011

First and foremost we must appreciate the organizers of film and tele awards ceremonies. But unlike in other countries, there is hardly any dialogue after awards ceremonies are over.

The results are made public and it is a tradition to accept the results with little hesitation.

I feel the media has a major role to play in creating such dialogues after awards festivals. It will serve the industries on the long run to produce quality creations.

The recent SIGNIS awards ceremony had some ideal components for serious dialogue and discussion.

It was very evident that the panel or organizers had some reservations about the movie ‘Ekamath Eka Rateka’ which was one of the rare classic movies released that year. But unfortunately except Ravindra Guruge who walked away with the award for the best editor, the film was deliberately allowed to lose its glitter.

The film’s lead actress Nirosha Perera who played an outstanding role, was nominated in the best actress category, but to no avail while the main actor and director Sanath Gunathilake was not even nominated in the best actor category. Instead a novice who had hardly acted was nominated in the best actor’s slot, thus instilling fears among genuine filmgoers about the credibility of film awards ceremonies.
It is high time, the media and responsible stakeholders take serious note of this trend and create a platform for dialogue.

Sinhala movies made on Buddhist themes

Wednesday, January 12, 2011
By Ramesh Uvais
Unlike in the past, today there is enthusiasm among artistes and filmmakers to base their creations on religious or philosophical themes. Today we wish to take a look at Sinhala movies made on Buddhist themes during the past 63 years,

Buddhist teachings centered on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, is the path for the purification of beings - for the overcoming of sorrows and lamentation, for the destruction of all mental and physical sufferings, for the attainment of insight and knowledge and for the realization of Nibbana.

It should however be noted that despite the existence of 550 Jathaka stories only a few have been transformed into movies in this country, though well-known tele drama director Thusita de Silva made a bold attempt to make them into tele drama in his Paramitha and Therani Geethaya series which were telecast on ITN.

Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne once commented that besides the 550 Jathaka stories, innumerable themes that can make thousands of films could be extracted from the Saddharma Rathnavaliya and the Poojavaliya.
Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne made his last movie based on a Buddhist theme. The film titled ‘Uppalawanna’ was produced by Ms. Milina Sumathipala on behalf of Sumathi Films. Popular actress Sangeetha Weeraratne fully shaved her head to play the title role.

In similar fashion, young actress Oshadie Hewamadduma shaved her head fully recently for a role in the upcoming movie ‘Mahindagamanaya’ – based on the arrival of Buddhism to Sri Lanka.
Movie-wise, only Wessanthara Jathakaya (Wesathuru Siritha) and Seriwanija Jathakaya (Bangali Walalu) were made into films based on Jathaka stories, while there had been other movies based on Buddhist themes.

Dr. Lester James Peries’ fifth feature film ‘Ran Salu’ (The Yellow Robe) which was made in 1967, is regarded as the first 100% Buddhist film made in Sri Lanka. The theme was Buddhist in a kind of theological and doctrinal way. Ironically, the film was made by a Roman Catholic. And it is known that since Dr. Peries was not willing to take a risk or make mistakes with the sensitive theme, he had requested scriptwriter P.K.D. Seneviratne to be on the sets everyday while the film was being shot, to ensure that no last minute changes were being made that would eventually affect the story. Interestingly, Ran Salu also represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Buddhist Film Festival in 1994.

In 1952, the movie ‘Siri Sangabo’ also touched upon a Buddhist theme and a Buddhist monk - Ven. Wathuregama Somalankara Thera, scripted the story for the first time.

‘Hathara Peraliya’ – directed by L.M. Perera in 1969 also became special because it was the first movie that depicted historical scenes of Buddhist heritage in India.

Among other Sinhala movies that touched upon Buddhist themes were Senasuma Kothenada, Sadol Kandulu, Sarawita, Lasanda, Sambudu Mahima, Siri Pathula, Patachara, Ajasatta, Angulimala and a few others including Suriya Arana, which was screened a few years ago.

Meanwhile, it might also interest one to know that several film songs based on Buddhist themes are popular among the masses even today.

Once again, a non-Buddhist – Al Haj Mohideen Baig is considered to be the singer who had sung the most number of Buddhist devotional songs in Sri Lanka. His evergreen song ‘Buddhang Saranang Gachchami …’ in Angulimala is probably the only song that’s being played over and over again especially during the Vesak season.

Among his other popular songs are Dam Sugandhe Mal Sugandhe, Minisamai Lowa Dewiyan Wanne, Budhunge Ama Dharme, Ko Sepatha Me Sansare.

Pandith W.D. Amaradewa’s Thanha Asha Ologu Karela, Sansara Gamane Thanha Asha, Paramitha Bala Pujitha are also popular film songs on Buddhist themes. Lata Walpola, Dharmadasa Walpola, Narada Dissasekara, Nanda Malini, Sujatha Attanayake are also among key singers who have enriched our cinema with a large number of film songs based on Buddhist themes.

Mother earns only few bucks hardly sufficient to feed him. They live in an isolated house in a coastal tourist-town. Other than the knowledge of English acquired by talking to tourists, Vidu does not have any form of formal primary education. One day a tourist throws Vidu a dollar note, thinking as if Vidu is a beggar.

“Why do you give me money ? What did I do to you to earn this money?” Vidu asks

“ What a little boy like you who hasn’t even gone to a school can do to earn a dollar from me?” The tourist asks in return.

No Problem Darling-Sinhala movies with English titles

Sunday, December 5, 2010
By Ramesh Uvais
Sinhala cinema’s pioneer actor and director B.A.W. Jayamanne who played the main male role in the first Sinhala talkie ‘Kadawunu Poronduwa’ had a penchant for making stage plays in the English alphabetical order while most of them were made into films too. Among them were APPARITION (Awatharaya), BROKEN PROMISE (Kadawunu Poronduwa), CHANGING FATE (Peralena Iranama), DEFEATED AIM (Weradunu Kurumanama), EVASIVE DENIAL ( Sengawunu Pilithura), FANATIC FAITH (Umathu Wishvasaya), GRISLY GUARDIAN (Kapati Arakshakaya), HASTY DECISION (Hadisi Vinischaya), IRANGANIE and others.
Since then there had been several Sinhala movies carrying English titles.
While M. Arukgoda named his film ‘Sister Mary’ in 1983, the real trend of using English titles resumed in the nineties with Hemasiri Sellapperuma’s ‘Love in Bangkok’ (1991), Roy de Silva’s ‘Cheerio Doctor’ (1991), Dinesh Priyasad’s ‘Come Or Go Chicago’ (1993), Sellapperuma’s ‘Hello Darling’ (1994), Kandapola Kumaratunga’s ‘Love 94’ (1994), Roy’s ‘Cheerio Captain’ (1995), Upali Piyaratne’s ‘Body Guard’ (1995), Roy’s ‘Cheerio Darling’ (1996), Lionel Panduwawela’s ‘Goodbye Tokyo’ (1997), Louis Vanderstraten’s ‘Girl Friend’ (1998), Sunil Soma Peiris’ ‘Hi Baby Hi’ (2001), Dharmasri Wckremasinghe’s ‘Jack and Jill’ (2001), Ranjan Ramanayake’s ‘Parliament Jokes’ (2002), Kandapola Kumaratunga’s ‘Taxi Driver’ (2003), Roy’s ‘Clean Out’ (2004), Bandu Samarasinghe’s ‘Left Right Sir’ (2004), Sudesh Wasantha Peiris’ ‘Underworld’ (2004), Jude Muttiah’s ‘Jolly Boys’ and other movies like One Shot One, Double Game, First Love Pooja, ‘Leader’, No Problem Darling, Sir Last Chance, Heart FM and others.
Among such movies in the making and awaiting release are ‘Super Six’, ‘Miss Dynamite’ and others.

Bora Diya Pokuna New movie

Tuesday, November 16, 2010
Internationally acclaimed young filmmaker Sathyajith Maitipe’s maiden cinematic venture which was in a limbo for nearly a decade even after winning awards at various film festivals is finally to be released in the CEL circuit cinemas.
Having obtained the green light from the Public Performance Board the film would be screened following the screening of Asoka Handagama’s latest movie ‘Vidhu’.

“I am glad that finally the public will have the opportunity to see my film,” director Sathyajith said. When queried about the ordeal he had to undergo to take his film to the audience the determined filmmaker said that he would not want to comment on anything but said his film would speak on his behalf.“Let my film and those who see it speak,” he said.
The delay of release was due to continued refusal by several censor boards stating that it was unsuitable to be seen by the Sri Lankan audience.
Prior to presenting for performance approval it was displated at a large number of festivals it was awarded the special prize for the Best Fiction Film at the Honolulu International Film festival 2005 in Hawaii, United States of America in addition to the prestigious Smithsonian institute of USA which selected Bora Diya Pokuna for their Discoveries- 2004 Programme as one of the six most exciting, entertaining and original films from Asia. Earlier it also won the “Tiger Award’s nomination” for the most promising new directors at the Rotterdam International film festival- 2004, in the Netherlands.
“Bora Diya Pokuna” represented Sri Lanka at Vancouver (Canada), Seattle (USA) and Brisbane (Australia) international Film festivals and was hailed by the critics as “At once a modern-day Buddhist parable, a deliciously juicy melodrama and an astonishingly frank depiction of sexual obsession”.
The film revolves around three rural garment factory girls a pampered prima-donna- Mangala, a safe runner- Swineetha and a tormented vixen (Gothami) who go through trials and tribulations of their bitter sweet youth in a liberalized industrial zone in the city.
Sathyajith

Ira Hada Yata Movie

Monday, November 1, 2010
The message in this film (under the Sun and Moon) is unambiguous and crystal clear. The Director of the film Bennett Rathnayake interprets the title of the film , “As preached by the Lord Buddha if there is something that we cannot hide eternally that is only the Sun, Moon and the truth. ‘Ira Handa Yata’ is to resurrect the series of events that took place in this country by disclosing the truth behind them,” One could also interpret that the Sun and the Moon do not discriminate any being living under, in providing light. There are no different Suns and Moons for different peoples based on ethnicity, language, caste or color. Therefore, all peoples should understand the uselessness of such differentiations among human beings. The secondary message is that love cuts across and has no concern for atrociously divided ethnic barriers.

Bennett Rathnayake has been able to create a gripping human drama based on Sri Lanka’s war against terrorism and its consequential fall out on its victims, to convey his powerful message. Above and beyond, he portrays his love for the country and how much yearning he has to see a peaceful prosperous motherland. I have heard about Bennett Rathnayake as one of the good film directors in the film industry but have not seen any of his previous films. “Ira Handa Yata” has won many international awards and whatever the awards it has won are fully justifiable.

An accidental meeting of a Corporal (Rakhitha) and an officer (Mahasen) of the Sri Lanka Army, in the forested war ground of Vanni at a dark night, facing a blistering attack of the enemy is the beginning of the story. The corporal’s efforts, who himself is wounded in the leg, to save the critically wounded officer through sheer respect, becomes futile and he ultimately abandon’s the officer at the request of him, while taking a last message from the officer to his wife. The officer ultimately faces death in the hands of a ruthless LTTE area leader while the corporal languishes in a hell hole of a prison of the LTTE along with other prisoners. He undergoes untold misery and torture but ultimately is rescued by the Sri Lanka Army. The corporal is having guilt over the death of the officer because he feels partly responsible for the officer being killed by the LTTE

Suseema movie

Suseema movie
Suseema’, a popular teleplay produced based on a comic story will be made into film by the same director Rohan Welivita soon. The musical story revolving around a beat band returns with a novel cast and a crew who will be a refreshing experience for those who had watched the teledrama version as well as the readers of the original comic story written by well known artist Janaka Ratnayake.
The lead roles played by Palitha Silva and Menik Kurukulasuriya in the teleplay are to be played by talented Suraj Mapa and Paboda Sandeepani while some of the other roles are to be played by Upeksha Sandamalee, Amila Abeysekera and Robin Fernando.
The teledrama with its tuneful songs like ‘Desa Piya Gathkala’ and ‘Dewathawan’ became hits and it was telecast nearly 15 times on different television channels. ‘Suseema’ was the first music direction of the king of Sinhala pop, Clarence Wijewardena in which music played a significant role.
Clarence’s music will be rearranged to suit the cinema and the present musical trends by ‘Centigrade’, a group of young musicians. “I’m sure that I made a correct decision when I selected this young group to direct music for my maiden film and also I wish that they would not harm the refreshing quality of Clarence’s tunes,” Rohan said speaking at the Muhurath which was held on June 26 which also fell on his 61st birthday.
Rohan who is also an experienced broadcaster will pay special attention to the technical standard of the movie. “We will introduce the latest High Definition (Full HD) camera, which is now being used in the international cinema,” Rohan said while introducing talented cameraman Sumedha Liyanage who is making his break through to the cinema.
“I could depend on Sumedha who is talented and eager to learn the new technology,” Rohan said.
Janaka Ratnayake, the inventor of all the characters of ‘Suseema’ in his comic story 30 years ago said, “I am glad that the characters which were limited to mere drawings are now going to be alive on the silver screen,”
“I created them in a medium without sound and verse but the story was about music and a musical group. And I was happy when these characters came live on the mini-screen and I am even happier that they are going to return on the big screen,” Janaka said in a happy tone.
The film is produced by leading business figure A. S. P. Liyanage who also produced the teledrama.
“So far we have telecast ‘Suseema’ on different channels 15 times and it is still in demand. I hope that the film too will be a hit just like its tele version.” Mr. Liyanage said at the Muhurath.

Pitasakwala Abirahasa New movie

Pitasakwala Abirahasa New movie
It was on April 25 this year, one of the leading scientists in the world, Stephen Hawking, warned the world that ‘extraterrestrials are almost certain to exist but humanity should avoid any contact’. In a series broadcast on the Discovery channel, Hawking said that contact with such a species could be devastating for humanity.
This was precisely the theme of young filmmaker Nirmal Rajapaksa’s debut film, who by then had completed his direction on the dangerous threat of aliens to the humanity.

The film titled ‘PitasakwalaAbhirahasa’ (The Mystery of ET) talks about a young man who tries to make contact with the extraterrestrials and the repercussions faced by him and the entire humanity. It shows the valiant attempt by another group of youngsters to prevent oncoming danger from the aliens.
The budding filmmaker, who passed out from a training course for film directors conducted by the National Film Corporation (NFC), ventured into the challenging task of making a 3-D animation film.
Young Nirmal managed to develop his own technology with whatever he could collect from the local market and, if necessary, from abroad.
“I wanted to search for the filmmaking technology and exploit it with my very first film,” said the 25-year-old determined director.
“For this purpose, I contacted some students of Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood. It was there the special effects used in films like ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Spiderman’ were made,” young Rajapaksa said.
Nirmal Rajapaksa spent nearly one and a half years to study the animation technology and he was thankful to the Arthur C. Clark Foundation and the Universities of Moratuwa, Kelaniya and Colombo for their support.
The project that was launched on July 2009 was completed by January 4 this year. This is a film that was produced in a digital environment with 100 per cent computer graphics.
His friend, 3-D Animation Director Induranga Weerasuriya, created three alien creatures, two space ships and a number of other creations including a digital theatre with the limited technology available.
“At one point, we wanted a steady camera to shoot in the forest and we made it using local technology,” said Nirmal. The entire film has undergone a colour grading.
The film was shot in Kandy, Digana, Balana and the Sinharaja forest while some urban scenes were shot in Gampaha, Negombo and Kiribathgoda.
The film team, both cast and the crew, comprises almost all amateurs. Young Lasantha Kamalsiri and Shamila Vijini play the lead role while Vimukthi Udara, Maduri Poornima, Arosha Kanchana, Randhika Nuwan, Anjula Gamage, Thilina Anuradha and Chamila Dhananjani play the supporting roles.
Kaushal Stanley and Sudesh Nissanka handle the special sound effects department in addition to creating the originalscore for ‘Pitasakwala Abhirahasa’. The art director is Deepthi Bandara and lighting was handled by Ranga Sri while experienced sound engineer Lionel Gunaratne of Sarasavi Studio was in charge of the sound control.
In addition to directing, Nirmal also plays a multirole as the scriptwriter, camera director, editor and main producer. ‘Pitasakwala Abhirahasa’ is co-produced by NFC and the film which is in its postproduction stage is soon to be released to the public.
